Celebrate Black History Month

What is Black History Month? Why is it celebrated?

People celebrate Black History Month or National African American History Month because it is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Black History Month begins on Wednesday, February 1st and ends Tuesday, February 2.

History

Black History Month grew from Negro History Week, which was promoted by historian Carter G. Woodson and prominent African American minister Jesse E. Moorland. The pair founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History that sponsored a Negro History Week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
