The college application process has been the sole thought on every senior’s mind at Lebanon Trail High School as they dive deep into the complex world of applications. In this particular time in life, when deadlines approach and dreams are at stake, the application process can seem both exhilarating and daunting at the same time.
“I have been trying to work on college applications a little bit each day to make the process less daunting and less stressful and utilize a planner to hold myself accountable,” said Addie Salvosa, a senior at LT. “I am feeling kind of confident about getting into my dream college but do not feel as much pressure since I mostly applied to match and safety schools.”
College applications usually begin with a reflection of the last four years of high school among the majority of seniors. Students are advised to reflect upon their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and personal interests. This is actually the most crucial introspective aspect, which can allow them to reach a decision regarding strengths and aspirations that might assist them in choosing colleges where they will fit in.
“While considering strengths, I would say aptitude. I like writing, and essays are a form of writing— a form of communication,” said Bhavana Balaji, a senior at LT. “I have an innate ability to motivate myself to finish these applications and I think that is a factor which influences my success in the apps I’ve submitted.”
At Lebanon Trail, a very strong support system is available for the network of students. Counselors are doing a number of workshops and individual sessions where they advise the applicants how to create a good résumé. The mystery is removed in such an opportunity and a difficult task has turned into a manageable plan.
“Mrs. Hall, specifically, helped me with my application by writing me a counselor recommendation. I would suggest befriending the counselor in order for them to know you,” said Balaji. “She also helped me with uploading school reports and making sure I could add recommenders in the FERPA section of the Common App. She’s been a great support during this process and it’s been great having her as our counselor this year.”
Technology also seems to be playing a big role in this application cycle. Many students use some sort of online service to facilitate their submissions, to better keep track of deadlines, and to organize materials. Such technologically savvy approaches save not only time, but also reduces the stress associated with missing critical deadlines.
“I would say that typing speed as a result of improved technology was the majority of my efficiency in the college application process,” said Balaji. “I can also ask ChatGPT for synonyms which limit repetitiveness, so I have many resources in which I can evaluate my essays and come up with new ideas.”
While students surround themselves with friendly people, anxiety is running high. It’s common to have feelings of frustration over being that perfect student, because stress from fellow peers and family may become overwhelming. Academic responsibilities often conflict with extracurricular involvement and application processes, and therefore, have made the levels of stress increase.
“One of my biggest fears about the college application process is if I make a mistake during the submission process,” said Salvosa.”I am a chronic overthinker, so my biggest struggle has been feeling confident when I am ready to hit the submission button.”
As deadlines for applications draw near, students stay tuned, putting in their effort to make polished applications. The excitement of possibly receiving acceptance letters now mingles with apprehension, creating a peculiar blend of anticipation. After all, the college application process at Lebanon Trail High School is much more than a means to an end; in fact, it is growth, resilience, and self-discovery. Students passing through this decisive chapter come out not as applicants, but as those prepared to take on every challenge that comes forward in life.
