Earth day, celebrated annually on April 22 since 1970, is a day dedicated to raising awareness on environmental issues and promoting the protection of our planet. The Eco Club here at LTHS has been putting in efforts all year to contribute to this cause. Chloe Fai, a senior at LTHS, and the president of Eco Club, shared details about the organization and the projects they have been working on this year.
“We’ve been building a hydroponic garden this year and growing lettuce that we use in the cafeteria,” Fai said. “For earth day this year we did one of our monthly harvests in the cafe.”
Hydroponic gardens are a way to grow plants without soil, this allows the Eco Club to use less space and water for their project. By using methods like this, the Eco Club is not just growing fresh lettuce for the school, but also showing how these ideas can help the environment.
Beyond the garden, Fai describes the main goal of the Eco Club and how the club wants to inspire the students of LTHS.
“We really want to spread awareness about what you can do for the environment even if it’s just the little things.” Fai said. “Like picking up trash,or turning off your lights, to composting on your own, we really wanna just educate and inspire others to do the same [as] we do.”
Fai believes that even the smallest action toward bettering the environment can be huge.
“When one person does it, it can lead to a ripple effect,” Fai said. “A lot of people don’t know where to start so we need to get involved.”
There is a lack of environmental awareness among the students at LTHS which is why it is important to spread awareness on this topic especially on young minds, like high schoolers.
Eco Club has been doing their part in taking action towards a better planet. They hope this can inspire LTHS students to do the same even if it is just as simple as turning off the lights when you leave a room.
Looking ahead, the Eco Club plans to continue expanding their sustainability efforts at LT. They hope that they can impact the students of LT in a positive way, contributing to a better earth.
