Even a rotten tomato, like the movie “Culpa Mia”, which ironically enamored the perfect idea of a “flop” movie, can be proof that bad fruits can ripen and bring about higher rotten tomato ratings!
Streaming on Prime Services, no-subscription needed, “My Fault: London” is a reworked adaptation of its prequel “Culpa Mia” which was originally released on June 8, 2023. “Culpa Mia” resonated with a shocking 1% of rotten tomato subscribers, an invested disappointment for the box-office producers, film directors, and viewers alike. “My Fault: London”, which was released February 13, 2025, has accumulated a 64% rotten tomato rating since its release; otherwise, a 63% increase from the original.
Both movies were adapted from a trilogy series which first premiered on Wattpad. The story follows soon-to-be step siblings who experience a heatwave of romance, with some twists and turns. However, some of these twists lay with an imbued narrative coming from the audience… In the original movie, the age difference between the male lead, Nick, and the female lead, Noah, is roughly about five years: Nick was 22 while Noah was 17. The audience was displeased, namely by the 16+ interactions between a minor and an adult, which the movie had allegedly “romanticized” to its audience. In the new movie, however, the age gap was reduced to one year— where Nick is 19 and Noah is an adult at 18 years-old, which was a positive improvement to viewers alike.
In the newly reworked movie, Nick and Noah are straightforward and open communicators, not bound by just a passionate romantic relationship, but also the humanistic side of romance: internal depth. Both the lovers come to understand one another; whereas, in the original movie, rather than showing each character’s thoughts and feelings, they premiere only the stereotypical aspects of love— an unrealistic emphasis on only the character’s physical relationship and intimacy, rather than their innate vulnerability with each other and their character development. A wide array of audiences cherished the new casting too, believing that the British-American romance was a far more accurate depiction of the character features and backgrounds which was first introduced in the Wattpad story.
Unsettling audience reviews— hate remarks in regards to the downfall of the original movie, “Culpa Mia” — also show a rising trend in the remakes of ‘flop’ movies or ‘successful’ movies in the film industry. Since the original “Culpa Mia” movie was released, it was immediately set to be remastered to fit audience preferences and a new movie was released within two years of casting, filmmaking, and production. Recently, new adaptations have started to bloom in light of old productions/films in order to embark on a journey which wasn’t previously able to resonate with its audience.
A rotten fruit like Culpa Mia? Ripen? With the release of “My Fault: London”, the ratings speak for themselves when they say that every rotten fruit has the potential to transform into sweet success!
