Growing up is a difficult concept to grasp during teenage years. While people are supposed to cherish our times as youth, people are dealt with feelings of confusion and nostalgia. They are faced with the idea of venturing into the professional world, leaving our childhood behind. Indie artist Beabadoobee addresses topics of self acceptance, heartbreak, and growth whilst facing adulthood in her third album: “This Is How Tomorrow Moves.”
“Cause days blend into one when I’m on the right beaches/Don’t wait to for the tide to dip both your feet in”
This marks the chorus of the eleventh track of the album “Beaches”. Beatrice Laus, professionally known as “Beabadoobee” in the music industry, uses symbolism as a rhetorical device to represent the concept of friendship. She expresses that when finding the “right” set of friends, it’s as if time moves by in a quick manner. This is because when around company, one doesn’t mind to look at time but rather enjoy time while it lasts. In addition, she encourages the audience to avoid hesitation in hopes of perfection. Instead she urges them to take the chances and go with the flow.
“In a way, I’m just figuring it out at my own pace/Just a girl who overthinks about proportions or her waist”
This is the opening line to the sixth track of the album. “Girl Song” is a much more personal song on the album when compared to others. It deals with the sensitive topic of self and body image throughout adolescence.
“I wanted to see the world in color/Through your eyes and through your mind”
In the main track “Take A Bite,” the concepts of heartbreak are addressed through the means of soft indie music. The relaxing melody soothes the listeners as they are faced with the topics of acceptance and self growth after grappling with loss.
Although Beabadoobee’s “This Is How Tomorrow Moves” Tour has ended in North America, her story is not over as she moves on to tour in the UK and Europe. With selling over 9,000 copies of her third studio album, Beabadoobee continues to reach new heights in the music industry. By intertwining her love for music and personal experience, she is able to make music that moves the audience whether through sound or meaning.
