Your beloved golden trio of the Percy Jackson series are back at it again, one last time before they are sucked into the trenches of college (⅔ s of them at least).
If you’ve read the original Percy Jackson series it’s clear that Percy has absolutely no idea what he’s doing (but we still love him). ‘The Chalice of the Gods’ is a follow-up of Percy Jackson and the Olympians and takes place after the second series, the Heroes of Olympus. It is also dedicated to the actors of the trio in the live action series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Percy is starting his senior year strong at the Alternative High School. Trying to get his diploma after a messy junior year that included fighting gods, going up against monsters, and falling into the deep dark depths of Tartarus. Having his hopes set on getting into the University of New Rome so he could go to college with Annabeth, he works hard to get back to pace with schoolwork.
Even after having saved the world from destruction and evil countless times, the kid still can’t catch a break. His father, Poseidon, tells him that he needs to get three recommendation letters from different gods in order to even have a chance of getting into the university. But there’s a catch, each recommendation letter has to come from a god who chooses him for a quest, which he must complete successfully in order to get a good recommendation. Annabeth and Grover insist that they will stand by him through each of his quests and that they’ll get through it together.
Soon, Ganymede, a god who serves as Zeus’ cupbearer, comes to Percy for help. He needed Percy and his friends to find his missing cup called the Chalice of the Gods because whoever drinks from it will become immortal. Which is why it was imperative that they find the chalice before it gets into the wrong hands. Like all quests, throughout their journey, they battle all kinds of monsters and overcome challenging obstacles.
Riordan has done it again, bringing life to these characters through their wit and humor. Throughout every one of his books, each story has been filled with thrilling adventures, plot-twists, and amazing character development. It’s clear that Riordan puts his heart and soul into these beloved characters making it a worthwhile read to individuals of any age.
Overall, this book was a huge wave of nostalgia and brought me back to my childhood when I read the books for the first time. I would recommend reading this book if you have read (at least) the first five books of the series as it would be a lot easier to understand because it references many events that take place in earlier books.
** Following ‘The Chalice of the Gods’, where the trio goes on their second quest for their next letter, is called ‘The Wrath of the Triple Goddess’. For the Percy Jackson fans out there: this second book is said to feature the goddess Hecate, as well as the beloved hellhound first featured in the ‘Battle of the Labyrinth’, Mrs. O’Leary. More information about this book is said to come soon.
