Fall and winter is always the time of major movie releases, specifically Oscar contenders. Despite the ongoing actors’ strike delaying many releases, there are still films to look forward to for the rest of the year. There are movies on this list for people of all movie tastes.
- Killers of the Flower Moon – October 20
Killers of the Flower Moon is based on the 2017 book about the true story of the Osage Native American murders in Oklahoma during the 1920s, after incredible amounts of oil were discovered on their land. Legendary director Martin Scorsese directs the movie. Its star-studded cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Brendan Fraser. Killers of the Flower Moon is an Apple TV+ distributed movie and will be released on October 20.
- Priscilla – October 27
Priscilla is about Priscilla Presley, the wife of Elvis Presley. This movie is based on Priscilla’s book Elvis and Me which recounted her relationship with Elvis. Priscilla is directed by the Oscar-winning director Sofia Coppola. This movie is coming after last year’s hit Elvis, but unlike that movie, Priscilla will be portraying Elvis in a very different light. This movie is set to be released on October 27 in theaters only.
- The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – November 17
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy. The book was released in 2020. This story focuses on Coriolanus Snow’s coming-of-age who was a prominent character in the original Hunger Games. One of the main characters Lucy Gray is played by the recent up-and-coming young actress Rachel Zegler. Francis Lawrence was also the director of the original 2010s Hunger Games trilogy movies. The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to be released in theaters only on November 17.
- Maestro – November 22 (In theaters), December 20 (On Netflix)
Maestro is a biopic about the American composer Leonard Bernstein. Berenstain is most known for his musical theater work, and one of his prominent works include the 1957 play West Side Story. Even though this film has only been seen by those at major film festivals it is already looking to be a part of this year’s Oscars. Maestro is a Netflix original and it will be released in select theaters on November 22, then it will be on Netflix December 20.
- The Bikeriders – December 1
The Bikeriders takes inspiration from the 1960s photojournalism book with the same name. The film follows a fictional motorcycle gang in the 1960s. Director Jeff Nichols takes on one of his first major movies. The cast includes A-lister actors Tom Hardy, and Jodie Comer, as well as up-and-coming actors Austin Butler and Mike Faist. The Bikeriders is going to be released December 1 in theaters only.
- Wonka – December 15
Wonka is a prequel to the famous children’s story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The film follows a young Willy Wonka played by Timothee Chalamet; this role differs from Chalamet’s darker and more adult roles. Chalamet is the third actor to play Wonka: Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp came before him. Wonka is being released during the perfect time of the year, and it is a great movie to watch with the whole family. Be sure to catch Wonka in theaters on December 15.
