The Super Mario Bros movie review
The company Nintendo has made many world changing forms of entertainment throughout the 133 years that it has been around. Nintendo has been the culprit to many best selling games throughout the years including but not limited to: The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and even the Super Mario Bros franchise. The most recent development made by nintendo that has astonished the fans, young and old, has been the recent release of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’.
Several fans expressed their concerns for the movies success before the release, commenting about the voice cast, the animation, and even comparing the movie to other video game related movies. Yet, all the doubts and skepticism was soon proved to be the complete opposite. In under one week, the movie surpassing the $500 million mark globally, making The Super Mario Bros, Movie the biggest video game adaptation ever.
The Mario Movie had several big factors contributing to its success, one of them being the voice cast containing some very big names like; Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Overall making it an all star cast!
Another big contribution to the movies success includes the video game references written all throughout the movie. Many fans were concerned with how the directors would turn this well known video game franchise into a separate story that not only had aspects from the original games, but also would be its own story overall. Unsurprisingly, people were thrilled to the amount of easter eggs and references to the games embedded within the film. Some of these easter eggs included; mario kart customization, the rainbow road, game sound effects, and even the royal wedding.
My personal favorite part was the unexpected performance by Jack Black’s Bowser. The scene in paticular included Bowser serenading his love for Princess Peach through a theatrical piano solo titled, Peaches. Jack Black’s acting and singing has always had a soft spot in my heart, so seeing the mario film use his talents to their fullest made me overjoyed. I don’t think they could’ve picked a better actor to play Bowser.
The Mario Bros. Movie came out April 4, 2023, still available to see in theaters as of currently (May 1st) and soon will be released on streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video.
