Celebrating diversity in Culture Club

After hearing about an opportunity to run a diverse and educational club, juniors Mansi Madhani, Shreya Vignesh, and Ashna Potluri knew they had to take it. The Culture Club at LTHS educates students about various cultures, but what goes on behind the scenes?

Mansi Madhani, who shares the co-president position with two of her friends, said that she took the offer for an important reason.

“I’ve just always been interested in learning about cultures and new things from all around the world,” Madhani said. “I was in GT Humanities freshman year and sophomore year, and we learned about world history and it was really interesting. I think that really showed me how interesting the world can be and how diverse the cultures in all parts of the globe are.”

The three girls think that students who join the club will gain important knowledge about different cultures and lifestyles.

“Our goal is to have everyone keep an open mind about different cultures and give them the knowledge or facts about different cultures,” Ashna Potluri, another co-president, said.

The third co-president, Shreya Vignesh, runs the club with the same purpose in mind.

Students who join the culture club can look to gain “a more worldwide view of the planet, rather than looking at everything from an American’s point of view,” Vignesh said

Students in the Culture Club can enjoy a variety of activities related to individual cultures to celebrate their differences.

“During meetings, we’ll usually start off by introducing a cultural tradition or some sort of event that usually occurs in the month we hold the meeting,” Madhani said. “After that, we’ll usually do some sort of cultural activity that relates to that tradition. Last meeting we talked about the Day of the Dead versus Halloween, [by] comparing the two. And then we had our members draw images representing what they learned about the Day of the Dead and what they learned about it.”

According to Potluri, the club has celebrated a number of cultures and activities since the beginning of the year. The upcoming holidays of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa are on the agenda, and they are finding ways to educate students about the special events.

“We’re probably going to have a little description and then have activities for them to do,” Potluri added.

LTHS is a diverse school, and having a club that teaches about diversity could be beneficial to many. Students who are interested in joining the club can text @lthscu to 81010.
