Remembering veterans day
Veteran’s day was first observed in 1918 by Americans on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month,” marking the end of World War I.
Originally named Armistice day, Veterans day is now a national celebration over the dedication of American veterans as they protect the peace and safety of the world.
As of April 2021, 19 million living veterans have served during at least one war during their service. 7.8 million of them served in the Gulf War while the other 5.9 million served during the Vietnam War era.
Though many schools host special meetings and pep rallies in recognition of these veterans, there are still many more actions that could be taken for students to truly educate themselves about the stories behind the sacrifice and recognize the contribution of veterans to the world.
Here is a list of things you can do today to honor the veterans around you:

- Send handwritten letters or digital cards to veterans through amillionthanks.org or other organizations that collect and distribute letters to veterans directly.
- Contact Collin County Veterans Services to participate in volunteering and provide support to local veterans and their families.
- Talk to veterans around your neighborhood and record their story and experiences to share it with your peers. This not only gives you an opportunity to understand the challenges and accomplishments veterans faced but also educate others around you about the significance of their service.
