One of the many challenges students face is balancing between work and school life. However, the experience of senior Ashley Shaw proves that it is possible to live one’s life to the fullest by working hard in and out of school. By participating in many different programs of her interest, she is able to inspire others and set examples to her peers regarding the possibility of participating in extracurricular activities outside of school. 

Shaw is a part-time student worker at hospitals, working for about six hours a day assisting different patients and working with her coworkers to garner experience in pursuing her dream job.  

“I go to the hospital from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on all B days,” Shaw said. “I work at different units and perform a variety of tasks. My goal is to be a trauma surgeon in a level one trauma center.”

Nevertheless, Shaw also has committed her time in other careers that helps her establish personal relationships and learn from her surrounding community. 

“I work part-time on the side at Texas Roadhouse (a local restaurant) and I also pet sit and baby sit,” Shaw said.

In terms of her success, Shaw acknowledged her supportive parents and the importance of family life that supports her goals towards success.

“I am in a family of four with my mother, father, brother, and myself,” Shaw said. “They’ve supported me in my healthcare career because they know this is what I want to do. But they know how stressful it can be as well.”

Shaw has clear goals in mind and knows what she wants to achieve in the future. 

“I want to be the healthcare professional that everyone wants to see,” Shaw said. “I want to work with patients to help with medical bills because I consider them outrageous.”

Lastly, Shaw said she enjoys being a part of a supportive community and pursuing a career that she is passionate about. Despite unforeseen challenges, she is still willing to take her step towards the future with positivity. 

“I like to say that it is very fun and exciting,” Shaw said. “It is very fast-paced and you are always on the move. It can be very stressful and I have seen some very disheartening things. You definitely have to try and manage all of the emotions that come with different emergencies, you can’t let all of the stuff get to you.”
