The Tradition of the Mum and Garter

Holly Hatcher, Main News Writer

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

One of the most popular Texas traditions is to have a mum or a garter on homecoming. A mum is usually a large, artificial mum, or chrysanthemum, decked out with ribbons, spangles, bells and more unique items. The colors of the decorations usually coordinate with the colors of the school the student is from.

The tradition of celebrating homecoming began in Missouri over a century ago, but spread to many states quickly. In Texas, students began to present corsages featuring chrysanthemums to their dates for homecoming.

As time went by, mums and garters started costing more money and becoming more detailed and decorated. By the late 1900’s, it had become a normal thing in Texas to have a large mum adorned with various bells and whistles, a train of ribbons suspended from it. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors coordinate the colors of their mum or garter with their school’s colors, while most seniors go with a white and silver or gold color scheme.

We can still see this tradition today on homecoming in Texas. Teenagers will usually buy or make elaborate mums and garters for their dates, or they may get one for themselves. For Lebanon Trail’s forthcoming, mums and garters are available for customization and purchase online at www.themumshop.com or in the cafeteria during lunch.
